Drug checking in Berlin: anonymous and free
In 2023, Berlin became one of the first German states to fund a drug checking service. People who use drugs can have substances analysed anonymously and receive personal counselling.
What is drug checking?
Drug checking means a sample of a substance is chemically analysed. The result shows which active ingredients it contains and, depending on the method, how strong it is. This can reveal dangerous cutting agents, unexpected substances or extremely high doses.
Why drug checking saves lives
- Illegal substances are unregulated: users don't know what's in them or how strong they are.
- High-dose ecstasy pills or mislabelled substances can lead to emergencies.
- The counselling reaches people who would otherwise never be in touch with support services.
- Warnings about dangerous samples are published, which protects others too.
How it works
- Visit a counselling point during the opening hours of one of the participating organisations.
- Anonymous counselling session: no name, no ID.
- Hand in a sample: only a very small amount is needed for the analysis.
- Collect your result after a few days, usually with a code number, together with advice about the risks.
Participating organisations, opening hours and current substance warnings are listed on the official project website: drugchecking.berlin. Ask on site whether counselling is available in English.
What drug checking can't do
- A test doesn't make use safe. Even "pure" substances carry risks.
- The result only applies to the sample tested, not to other pills or powder from the same source.
- Individual factors (health, medication, mixing) still matter. More under Safer use.
Is it legal?
Berlin's project is funded by the State of Berlin and works anonymously. Possessing illegal substances is still generally a criminal offence under the Narcotics Act. The organisations explain on site and on the project website how sample drop-off is handled and what you should keep in mind.
